Welcome!
As your program director, I welcome all of you to the University of Michigan. While some of you are returning from last year, for others this is your first time here in Ann Arbor. You will have a great opportunity to meet each other, learn from each other, and build the foundations of relationships that hopefully will last a lifetime. You are indeed our most valuable resource and asset for the future.
The University of Michigan offers each of us great opportunities to interact and learn. In this regard, the Financial Engineering Program is an excellent example of interdisciplinary cooperation among the College of Engineering , Literature, Science and Arts, and the Ross School of Business. This cooperation offers our students the best available set of skills that spans the entire University.
My goal is to build on the spirit of cooperation that was initiated by the previous directors of the Financial Engineering Program, starting with John Birge, the founder of the FE program at the University of Michigan in 1997, and continuing with Romesh Saigal, Larry Seiford, and Steve Pollock as recent directors. Their pioneering efforts have led to a highly successful program, as evidenced by approximately one hundred students currently enrolled practically spanning the globe, many hundreds of students graduated, and the dozens of recruiters who have hired them. Our recruiters range from information system specialists, consulting firms, hedge funds, risk-management specialists, trading firms, investment and commercial banks and other financial intermediaries, and corporate finance recruiters across the spectrum of companies. The diversity of companies speaks to the high regard they have for our students.
Even after you graduate, you will remain as representatives and ambassadors of our program. Your future success will make us even better, just as our success will improve your future success. As such, we will care, support, and provide a helping hand to our community of students and alumni whenever needed. In return, we expect all of you to proudly wave our maize and blue flag.
As your program director, I am always happy to listen to your ideas to uphold the traditional of excellence at the University of Michigan and to help improve our program. Both my doors and my mind are always open to you and your ideas.
